In this consultation, there is a direct conflict between the Doctor and his patient, Mr Williams. Both the patient and the Doctor are in an intolerable position. In the scene, we see this unfold. The tension between the Doctor and his patient, Mr Williams, is high. In this case, the patient, Williams, is requesting a Fit Note/Certificate to cover him for a recent illness from influenza. Subsequently, Williams tried to call the Doctor’s receptionist but was told not to unless he was seriously ill.

Regardless of that fact, Mr Williams attends a “check-up” and tries to get a fit note. Nevertheless, the Doctor declines to give the certificate, and the atmosphere heats up. Furthermore, the Doctor questions the patient about his smoking habits and then tries to induce guilt about smoking and bronchitis in his patient.

Despite this, William refused to follow the Doctor’s recommendations, causing the Doctor to shift the topic of conversation. At this point, the Doctor also reiterates that he will not be fulfilling the patient’s previous requests for backdated certificates.

As a result, the situation becomes more tense as the patient begins to criticise the doctor for his wealth and privilege. The accusation leads to chaos, prompting the doctor to end the crisis and maintain control.

Upon further review, despite William’s most strenuous efforts, the doctor has encountered him so frequently that he has developed a perception that William may have ulterior motives. Consequently, the doctor refused to issue a fit note for the patient, who did not inform the doctor of the illness until after it occurred.

Should Mr Williams have been entitled to a fit note?

A fit note is a Sick Note or a Doctor’s note in which a Doctor provides you with written information/evidence on the advice they have given their patient to be fit for work.
