A Prescription for the Wife!

Play Video about A Prescription for the wife!

We start the tape during the consultation. Mr Edwards, who is deeply concerned for his wife’s well-being, asks the doctor for a new contraceptive pill prescription. He explains that his wife is out of town taking care of her sick mother and has left her pill prescription in town. Therefore, Mr Edwards, the patient, innocently requests that the doctor issue a new duplicate prescription for his wife so that he can send it to her by mail.

In light of this, we still see the doctor asking Mr Edwards many questions to understand the situation. As the issue seems reasonable and there are no concealed concerns known to the doctor, he makes a significant decision to consent to prescribe additional birth control pills.

At this point in the clip, it is advisable to pause the tape and discuss whether the doctor’s actions were reasonable and if anyone would disagree with his decision to prescribe medication.

We must not tell lies.

Nine Months?

As the session continued, the doctor discovered that Mr Edwards had been separated from his wife for approximately nine months. Additionally, the patient shockingly asked the doctor to prescribe a pill as evidence of his wife’s adultery in the divorce proceedings. The patient abruptly left before the doctor could respond, giving the doctor no opportunity to rectify the situation.

Upon Mr Edwards’ departure, a pervasive sense of unease engulfed the doctor. Subsequently, he realised disquieting that he had been misled. The gravity of the situation was intensified by the belated recognition that Mr Edwards was, in fact, the spouse of the doctor’s patient. This abrupt disclosure left the doctor profoundly unsettled.

How can we promote honesty?

Doctors often face lies about smoking, exercise, alcohol, and sexual history. So, how do doctors encourage patients to tell the truth? Fierce Healthcare surveyed 500 people to determine the primary causes of patients lying. The results varied due to some patients lying about multiple things. The study also outlines techniques healthcare professionals can use to help avoid patient lies.

When you approach your doctor with openness, honesty, and a willingness to communicate without preconceived notions, you create an environment for more effective healthcare. Engaging in open and transparent dialogue enables your doctor to provide better care tailored to your needs, ultimately contributing to improved well-being following your consultation.
