This case study follows a patient undergoing an inpatient detox. Her progress is typical; not straight forward! There are many learning points along the way. Video allows us to show progress over time and in this case , her reflections on her life two years later are illuminating. If you were very observant earlier on in the programme, some of these may not be a surprise and account for the good long-term outcome.
This is a great introduction for students new to mental health, and as a patient information programme.
MANAGING IN-PATIENT DETOX
Detoxification is the process by which patients are weaned off alcohol. It is possible to simply consume reducing quantities each day. Some patients do well with this approach and it has the advantage of helping them negotiate the social changes that they need to make in their life at the same time. It is usually considered easier to use a drug with a cross-tolerance to alcohol, a long acting benzodiazepine being a good choice, although not everybody needs medication. Many patients can be detoxified at home.
Bonus Features:
Bonus features include a conversation between two consultant Psychiatrists and their experiences with patients who are going through a detox, as well as their thoughts on alcoholism and ways treatment can be approached. There is also a short video featuring nurses from the Cardinal Clinic, who regularly help and monitor patients throughout detox.
