ADDICTION
These have been carefully designed to be equally useful as a lecture aid and for private viewing. The programmes run through the various aspects of the subject in a systematic manner and after each section there is a natural break. This is to enable you to review the points raised and take notes. For the lecturer I hope these programmes will make your life a bit easier and provide you will useful illustrations. There is some repetition with several speakers saying more or less the same thing and the points further underlined by the use of captions and illustrations. We concentrate on the fundamentals and want students to understand the core issues.
I would encourage you to find out more about AA and psychotherapy.
Addictions are challenging to manage.
For example, a conclusion from a recent article in the BMJ (2020) stated “Evidence is lacking for benefit from interventions that could be implemented in primary care settings for alcohol abstinence, other than for Acamprosate. More evidence from high quality randomised controlled trials is needed, as are strategies using combined interventions (combinations of drug interventions or drug and psychosocial interventions) to improve treatment of alcohol dependency in primary care.” (BMJ 2020;371:m3934).
Thus you might consider this all hopeless, but the more you can understand about the subject the better you will be able to offer guidance in this complex field to your patients, which after all is the point.
The bonus features (in the detox page) are very much clinically oriented. Just how do you approach your first clinical interaction? We all have our own style, depending on our own personality – there is not a correct one, it depends on us, the circumstances and of course what the patient and the family bring to the consultation. Here are some ideas to help you frame your own approach. Whatever the technology available to us the skills of the clinical interaction are timeless. Even if initially the situation didn’t look good, in every-day clinical life, there are good outcomes. Have a look here for an example.
